Nawazuddin Siddiqui says he didn’t want to deliver a ‘Hollywood-ian’ performance in Haddi: ‘Transgender people have a loud personality’
Nawazuddin Siddiqui said that he did not want to deliver a subdued performance in Haddi as he had seen transgender people being loud in real life.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui was last seen in Haddi. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays a transgender character in his latest film Haddi. Speaking about his performance, the actor shared that he wanted to make it loud because that’s how he has seen transgender people behave in real life. Nawazuddin said that almost two decades ago, when he lived in Delhi, he lived close to a colony which was largely populated by transgender people and he drew from his observations of that time to play the character of Harika.
“They have a loud personality. They talk in a higher volume. They shriek when they are crying,” he told Film Companion. The actor said that he did not want to be “Hollywood-ian” and give a “subdued” performance here because that wouldn’t have matched his character. “I didn’t want to perform in a subdued way in this. I didn’t want to make it Hollywood-ian. We watch that and it corrupts us. They have different emotions, they have a different life. We have a different life,” the actor said.
Nawazuddin continued, “I didn’t want to go in that zone. There are other movies I can do in that zone, where I have to give a subdued performance, where I will cry and you wont realise that I’m crying. This performance is big, that’s how the character is.”
Haddi also stars Nawazuddin’s longtime collaborator, director Anurag Kashyap. Anurag recently said that Nawazuddin is “misjudged” by the world but the actor does not defend himself. “He’s also an extremely misjudged and misconstrued person. Also because of whatever it is… the world sees you for many things. He is a guy who doesn’t defend himself, he always stays silent. He never… he rarely stands up to something, out of love or whatever reasons it is or out of awkwardness. But when he does, it really makes a difference but most often than not, he does not. But I know him really well inside out so I have a very special place for him in my heart,” Anurag told Humans of Bombay.
