‘My mother spoke to Priya Sachdev’: Sunjay Kapur’s estranged sister Mandhira claims Rani Kapur was ‘made to sign papers behind locked doors’

Mandhira Kapur, the estranged sister of Sunjay Kapur, has come to her mother Rani Kapur's rescue after the latter was allegedly made to sign company papers "behind locked doors" following her son's death.

Mandhira Kapur, sister of actor Karisma Kapoor’s late ex-husband Sunjay Kapur, has voiced strong concerns over the fate of Sona Comstar, the company founded by her late father Surinder Kapur. After the recent death of her brother Sunjay, Mandhira has claimed that “a bunch of people,” including Sunjay’s last wife and actor Priya Sachdev, cornered her mother Rani Kapur into signing some company papers.

“What papers are they not showing us that they’d gotten signed in this 13-day period that they’ve taken over? My mother was made to sign papers behind locked doors. And this wasn’t once, but twice,” claimed Mandhira, who claimed she can’t name the bunch of people involved because of “legal reasons.” Priya was appointed as a Non-Executive Director at Sona Comstar days after her husband’s death.

“I was standing at the door banging on it. She was grieving,” added Mandhira in an interview to Republic. “There were two doors, actually — a door inside and a door outside. So she couldn’t hear me. The bottom line is she signed some papers during the mourning period. She was in deep grief. She came to me and said, ‘I don’t know what papers I’ve signed. And since then, we’ve been asking and getting no response. So, what are you hiding from us? I think this will all unfold at some point, and the truth will come out,” said Mandhira.

Mandhira admitted while she hasn’t spoken to Priya about this, her mother has asked her to send them the papers she signed. However, she hasn’t gotten any response yet. “We’ve written to the people asking them (for the papers), and we’ve been told her email is compromised. So we can’t send her anything,” claimed Mandhira, who said Priya had promised her mother-in-law that she’d send the papers.

Mandhira has confessed she wasn’t on talking terms with Sunjay for four years, but has now returned to the family to help her mother out. “We had a fight between a brother and a sister. But it doesn’t take away the 40+ years before that. It doesn’t take away from the fact that I’m Dr. Kapur’s daughter. Why wouldn’t I fight for my mother? Who’s everyone else who’s coming in and claiming anything,” said Mandhira.

She revealed that their father chose to have his kids lead separate businesses. While Sunjay took over Sona Comstar, Surinder Kapur founded Smick, which was initially registered as Sona Mandhira. Sunjay sued his sister and wanted her to not call her company Sona. “I changed it to Smick. He signed an agreement that he wouldn’t take the case further. And we ended stuff amicably. There was no loss or win,” said Mandhira.

Mandhira also dismissed the claims that she’s vying for her brother’s inheritance now because her business has taken a beating. “Who’s once said my business isn’t doing well? This is the beauty of this entire thing unfolding — I get told a new thing every day. I’m not fighting for inheritance, but for legacy. When you’ve built something, you know its value. When you’re standing on the outside, you only see the money value. We have emotional attachment to this brand,” argued Mandhira. She clarified a subsidiary of her company, based in the UK, has declared insolvency. “It’s not a big deal. You can ask any business, we all do it. It’s not the end of the world. I’m sorry I hate to break people’s hearts, but I’m fine,” added Mandhira.
