Moushumi Chatterjee recalls being thrown out of Amitabh Bachchan film, says she’s ‘a better person’ than Jaya Bachchan
Moushumi Chatterjee, who mostly maintained professional relationship with her co-stars, often faced problems due to her not-so-friendly nature.

Moushumi Chatterjee and Amitabh Bachchan collaborated in three films in the 1970s–Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Benaam, and Manzil. However, in 1981, when filmmaker Shakti Samanta signed the duo for Barsaat Ki Ek Raat, he was made to remove her. Eventually, Rakhee Gulzar was cast in the film, as the love interest of Amitabh’s character. In a recent interview, Moushumi Chatterjee said that she was likely replaced because she wasn’t the friendliest person around.
Speaking with Nayandeep Rakshit, Moushumi shared, “It was filmmaker Shakti Samanta’s film Barsaat Ki Ek Raat. This one day, Shakti uncle called me and asked, ‘Did you have any fight with Amitabh Bachchan?’ I told him, ‘Uncle, I am not so close to anyone that they would fight with me. I am very cordial and nice and I get that feedback also.’ He said, ‘That is the problem. Most of the heroes say, ‘Moushumi ko kyu liya uske sath humara tuning sahi nahi hai.’ He then asked me, ‘Do you understand what do they mean by tuning?’ I said, ‘Maybe, now I understand. Maybe more than friendship. But I am not here to make friends. I am here to work.'”
She added, “So Shakti uncle removed me from this film. I told him ‘I will return you the signing amount’, he said, ‘No, keep it with you, I will make my next film with you.’ So I did Anand Ashram. I understood that he couldn’t spoil his relationship with the number one star.”
Years later, Moushumi and Big B collaborated once again for the 2015 film Piku, where she was seen in a brief role. Sharing her experience, the actor said, “Amitabh Bachchan is really amazing. When I worked with him in Piku, he was so punctual. The younger generation needs to learn from him.”
In the same interview, Moushumi also addressed the controversy that erupted when she snapped at the paparazzi for calling her Jaya Bachchan. She said, “Don’t call me Jaya Bachchan, I am a better person.” She clarified her statement in the interview and said, “People fabricate it, but the reality is that I don’t like comparisons.Sometimes, they (paps) irritate you. They don’t want to listen. Once you want to stay away from the limelight, you cannot force a person to like you. But, I don’t like to compare. I consider I am a better person.”
She admitted that there was a tense undercurrent between them in the 1970s. “I had heard stories, and yes, there was a rivalry,” she said. “But I came from a wealthy family, I didn’t have to rely on films to make money. But some people live in small houses, and then they want a bigger house.”
