Mona Singh played a pivotal role in Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s iconic film 3 Idiots. Her most important scene came at the end, when her character goes into labour in the middle of a rainstorm. With no means to carry her to the hospital, Aamir Khan’s character of Rancho modifies a vacuum cleaner into a ventouse and delivers the baby with the help of Pia (Kareena Kapoor), Farhan (R Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi).
During her recent interview with Humans Of Bombay, Mona shared a fun behind-the-scene detail of the film and shared how she slapped Aamir really hard while shooting the scene. She said, “The Table Tennis scene was pretty intense and everybody was sharing their stories. All the men around me were telling me, ‘My wife did this, my wife did that.’ Rajkumar Hirani sir told me, ‘My wife kicked me out.’ Madhavan told me, ‘My wife bit me.’ Then I was like, ‘What should I do?’ Then Aamir sir told me, ‘Mona you slap me.’ Then I slapped him but it wasn’t hard enough and he was like, ‘Asli vala thappad maro (Give me a real slap).’ I went full Sardarni josh and I slapped him. I remember his bodyguard staring at me and I was like, ‘Sorry.’ But Aamir sir continued acting because that’s what he loves. He wants it to be all real and I gave it all real.”
Mona had a great time working on the film as none of the actors on the set of 3 Idiots acted ‘starry’. She recalled, “All of the actors in that film were so grounded. They kept rehearsing with all of us. They kept saying, ‘Mona tum star ho. We love you.’ I was like, ‘Why isn’t anyone acting starry?’ Coming from a non-filmy background, we all have preconceived notions about every actor, but none of them were like that. They were all pranksters.
3 Idiots was a massive success in India as well as overseas. The film won three National Awards and left a significant social impact on education attitudes in India as well as in other Asian countries such as China. It was remade in Tamil as Nanban (2012), which also received critical praise and commercial success. A Mexican remake, 3 Idiotas, was also released in 2017.
