A story that every Indian sports fan would’ve heard is dramatised in the first teaser for the long-delayed Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn as the coach Syed Abdul Rahim, who is regarded as the architect of modern Indian football. The film, directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, finally got a teaser on Thursday, coinciding with the release of Ajay’s latest film, the action-drama Bholaa.

The one-and-a-half minute teaser doesn’t reveal too many plot details, but is set during the Golden Age of Indian Football, and opens at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. India is set to take on Yugoslavia in a nearly flooded pitch, and more memorably, barefoot. The official synopsis describes Maidaan as “the true story of an unknown hero who created history and records for India such that even 60 years later, we are not able to match upto those accomplishments in the most played sport in the world, football.”

We see shots of the large stadiums, of Ajay’s character waiting in the tunnel, of riots and celebrations, and also a dramatic moment in which he’s on the ground with tears in his eyes. The video ends with a tease of Ajay’s customary inspirational monologue, in which he says, “Aaj Maidaan mein utarna gyarah, lekin dikhna 1.”

The film seems to be similar to the iconic Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De! India, in which SRK played the fictional coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. Some years ago, Akshay Kumar starred in Gold, which was about the Indian hockey team’s first gold medal victory at the Olympics, in 1948.

Maidaan also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao and Bengali actor Rudranil Ghosh. The film is by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta and Akash Chawla, and the screenplay and dialogues are written by Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah respectively. AR Rahman has composed the music. Maidaan was delayed due to the pandemic, but is all set to release worldwide in theatres on 23rd June 2023.
