Mahesh Bhatt has been very vocal about his relationship with late actor Parveen Babi and in a recent interview, the filmmaker opened up about the collapse of their relationship and why he decided to step away from her. Parveen was battling some mental health concerns at the time but since this was back in the 1970s, she was never diagnosed. Mahesh shared that his relationship was a “major turning point” in his life but it saw a “tragic end.”

Talking to BBC News Hindi, the filmmaker said that she had a “mood disorder” and he saw her “collapse.” “I saw her go through her collapse. I went through it with her. And when you see someone breaking down in front of you… I saw her leave in the morning for her shoot with her make-up on but when I came back in the evening, she was shivering and sitting in a corner like an animal. She kept saying ‘someone is going to kill me.’ She was suffering from schizophrenia,” he said. Mahesh shared that he tried “a lot to help her out” but “such kind of diseases take a toll.” “When that relationship collapsed, the relationship ended on a painful note,” he said.

Before Mahesh Bhatt, Parveen Babi dated actor Kabir Bedi and he also saw glimpses of her disorder. “Kabir didn’t know that she has a mental ailment. He said that he first saw a glimpse of this dimension of her personality in Italy,” he said and added that when he started dating her, he had no idea that such a disorder even existed. “I didn’t even know that there is something as mysterious as this mental disorder that changes your whole personality,” he said.

Mahesh said that Parveen was, perhaps, 26 when they were dating and her condition was “very severe”. He said that she started healing on her own shortly afterwards and meeting UG Krishnamurti helped that process. “He told me that it is impossible for you to stay together because you will never leave movies and if she keeps doing movies, she will be destroyed,” Mahesh recalled.

Mahesh Bhatt said that he “could see that she was heading towards suicide but I didn’t have the energy to go through that whole cycle with her again. After that, we parted ways.”

Parveen Babi died in 2005 at the age 50. Her remains were found three days after her passing.
