R Madhavan recalls how there was ‘discord’ in his family about money matters: ‘Father would say I can’t afford it’
Madhavan recalled that his parents would disagree on how to spend their money despite being a double income household.

R Madhavan, who has been trying to raise awareness about finances, investments and monetary planning on his YouTube channel For a Change, recently discussed the economics of his household from the time when he was living with his parents. Madhavan said that he lived in a double income household where both his parents had regular jobs and while they enjoyed the perks, he recalled how his father sometimes put his foot down when it came to expenses that he did not approve of.
Talking on the channel, Madhavan recalled, “I come from a family that was a double income family way back in the 1970s. My mother was working for Bank of India, and my father was working for Tata Steel and almost equal salaries.”
Madhavan said that there weren’t many defined rules about who would spend for the household, there were some arguments here and there. He also mentioned that his father saw the second income as “bonus.” “There weren’t any defined rules about who should be spending for what. We, of course, had the privilege of being a double income family so the holidays were better, maybe the flights were a little more frequent than the others but I distinctly remember the discord in the family when my father was like ‘I will pay for these things but these other things, I am not going to pay for because I can’t afford it. I have to make sure that I stay in line and I assume I am going to be the single income family household lifestyle for the rest of my life because what you are earning is bonus’,” he recalled.
Madhavan defended his parents’ take on the matter and shared, “I am sure he had a way of looking at it. I am sure that mother was thinking when we can afford it why are we not living now? When are we going to live and all those conversations.”
