Maalik box office collection day 5: Rajkummar Rao’s latest trails Stree 2 by Rs 160 crore at the same stage
Maalik box office collection day 5: Rajkummar Rao's film has earned only a fraction of what Stree 2 did in five days last year. Its earnings are much lower even than Bhool Chuk Maaf earlier this year.

Director Pulkit’s action film Maalik, starring Rajkummar Rao, saw a slight rise in its domestic box office collection on Tuesday, after a drastic fall on the first Monday. It failed the crucial Monday test, but the minor increase on Tuesday suggests that it isn’t the end yet for the action film. On Tuesday, Maalik collected Rs 2 crore, a slight rise compared to its Monday earnings of Rs 1.75 crore. The Monday collection was quite a drop from its Sunday earnings of Rs 5.25 crore, the same as its collection on Saturday. Maalik opened at Rs 3.75 crore on Friday, July 11. As per Sacnilk, its total box office collection in India so far is Rs 18 crore.
In the process, Maalik has now come close to beating the lifetime domestic earnings of its fellow action movie, Sonu Sood’s directorial debut Fateh (Rs 18.87 crore), which also released earlier this year. Given the current trajectory, Maalik may soon surpass Kangana Ranaut’s period political drama Emergency (Rs 20 crore) soon as well.
Maalik has turned out to be the preferred Bollywood pick for Hindi moviegoers. Santosh Singh’s romantic comedy Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, starring Vikrant Massey and marking the debut of Shanaya Kapoor, has earned only Rs 1.56 crore in five days at the domestic box office, which is still lower than Maalik’s lowest-single day collection on Monday (Rs 1.75 crore).
However, Maalik is facing stiff competition from its Hollywood counterpart from last week — James Gunn’s Superman reboot, starring David Corenswet as the titular superhero. That film has collected Rs 31.6 crore at the Indian box office in five days, which is over Rs 13 crore more than that of Maalik. While the lion’s share in Superman’s India collection still comes from the native English version, the Hindi dubbed version also makes for a significant share at Rs 6.85 crore.
Maalik is also performing poorly, as compared to previous Rajkummar Rao films. Last year, his horror comedy Stree 2 became the first Hindi film to earn Rs 600 crore at the domestic box office. That film had earned over Rs 175 crore in the first five days. Even Rao’s last release, Karan Sharma’s romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, had made Rs 38.25 crore in the first five, much more than what Maalik has made so far.

Rajkummar Rao showcases a fierce new avatar in Maalik. Produced by Kumar Taurani under Tips Films and Jay Shewakramani’s Northern Lights Films, Maalik is directed by Pulkit, best known for helming Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Netflix India film Bhakshak. Pulkit has previously collaborated with Rao on the period mystery show Bose: Dead/Alive, which released on ALTBalaji in 2017. Also starring Manushi Chhillar, Maalik has Rao play a ruthless gangster who appears to stop at nothing to fulfil his ambition of political power and fame.
