Kiran Rao says being reduced to just ‘Aamir Khan’s wife’ never bothered her: ‘I have quite a laugh about it’

Kiran Rao addressed being referred to as 'Aamir Khan's wife' since her marriage to the actor. The couple announced their separation in 2021 via a joint statement.

Filmmaker Kiran Rao is currently immersed in the promotions of her upcoming directorial venture Laapataa Ladies, which is co-produced by her ex-husband and renowned actor, Aamir Khan. Despite their separation in 2021, the former couple has maintained a strong bond of friendship and mutual support.

In a recent interview with Zoom, Kiran candidly addressed the persistent association with being referred to as ‘Aamir Khan’s wife.’ She said, “Even now at the airport, people go like, ‘You are Aamir Khan’s wife, right?’ They might not even know my name but the association is direct with him and I have become accustomed to it. Though now I have to say ex-wife. It doesn’t bother me because I have always had my own interests, my own set of friends, and my own life, which I actively work at having. Anyone in marriage needs to have their space and identity.”

Kiran added, “Partnering with Aamir in Aamir Khan Productions has always been easy because he is very welcoming of opinions, he looks at me as a creative partner. It’s very heartening because though everybody sees me as a wife or an ex-wife, if I didn’t have a very strong sense of self I would have been depressed by being reduced to just a wife. But honestly, I have quite a laugh about it.”

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s journey began when Kiran worked as an assistant director on the iconic film Lagaan, starring the actor in the lead role. They tied the knot in 2005 and welcomed their son, Azad, through surrogacy in 2011. They announced their separation in 2021 via a joint statement.

Despite their divorce, Aamir and Kiran continue to share a close bond and are frequently seen together. Kiran also actively participated in the wedding of Aamir’s daughter, Ira Khan, from his previous marriage to Reena Dutta.
