In a recent interview, Kiran Rao shared the reason behind her decision to make movies under her own production banner instead of Aamir Khan Productions.

Kiran Rao, Aamir KhanKiran Rao was married to Aamir Khan for 16 years.

Filmmaker Kiran Rao, who has earlier directed films bankrolled by her former husband Aamir Khan’s production house, is now a co-producer of her upcoming film Laapataa Ladies, under her own production banner, Kindling Pictures. In a recent interview, Kiran shared the reason behind her decision to make movies under her own production banner instead of Aamir Khan Productions.

While speaking to News18, Kiran said, “I can’t expect Aamir to make everything that I make. Aamir particularly works in a way where he doesn’t do anything just because his son, his daughter, his wife, or his brother… the idea should work first. Also, we should make it within the budget that would support the idea.”

The director further explained, “So, the budget justifies your risk and you can do any work you want to do.” Kiran had launched Kindling Pictures many years ago, but Laapataa Ladies is her first directorial to be produced under the banner.

Kiran Rao also shared that while she wants to explore the space of web series, Aamir Khan is not interested in it for now. “The idea is that I want to explore, especially in terms of series. Aamir is not necessarily interested in developing them right now. This (her production house) is more of a creative lab. At some point, I might go back to AKP (Aamir Khan Productions) and ask, ‘This is a project, would you like to produce it?'” said Kiran.

The filmmaker, who got divorced from Aamir recently, also clarified, “It’s not because I don’t want to work with AKP in any way. I feel this is a space (her production house) that gives me the freedom to develop what I want to make.” She added, “Aamir Khan Productions has given me space for whatever I want to do. I have been involved with every production. I will be attached to AKP always. I feel it’s mine. I am one of the directors and I won’t leave it. I am spiritually and emotionally connected to AKP.”
