Late actor Sridevi’s daughter Khushi Kapoor is busy making a space for herself in Bollywood. The actor has already marked her OTT presence with Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies and is now awaiting her big screen debut Loveyapa’s release. The film, which also stars Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan, has been the talk of the town for its peppy songs and out of the box trailer. On Tuesday, the actors graced the latest edition of SCREEN Live in New Delhi. During the conversation, Khushi opened up about the response to her debut series, and her take on the ever-contentious topic of nepotism.

Zoya’s The Archies was a lot of things, but most importantly, it was one of the more polarising titles on Netflix. Was it the setting? Was it the actors? Was it the story? Nevertheless, when asked if there is anything that she would want to change about The Archies, Khushi said, “Probably… marketing wise, it had to be made clear that the film is catering to a younger audience. I don’t want to particularly change anything, and even I believe the film was for a really young audience. In fact, the people who enjoyed it the most were the ones who were below the age of 16. Plus, I feel like everything doesn’t have to be made for everyone.”

Accepting the criticisms, Khushi pointed out that every audience member holds the individual right to like or dislike a film, and there is nothing that can be done on that front. “But yeah, I don’t regret the film at all. I learnt everything from the film. I owe everything to Zoya, and I have a deep connection with the film and people around it.”

The Archies also faced the issue of being over-hyped and over-scrutinised at the same time, considering the star cast included names like Agastya Nanda (grandson of Amitabh Bachchan), Suhana Khan (daughter of Shah Rukh Khan), and of course, Khushi (daughter of Sridevi). Not wanting to sidestep the question of nepotism, Khushi took it head-on, and said, “Of course, expectations are higher when you come from a certain background. We are here because we come from a place of privilege, and even these expectations are placed on us because we come from a certain background. We can’t complain about it.”

Reiterating her understanding that cinema is far from being a ‘level-playing field,’ Khushi pointed out, “We need to acknowledge where we come from, and appreciate our background. We work really hard too, but the main issue is when people in this position play it down by saying it is hard for everyone. Of course, everyone has to work hard in this profession, but you need to accept certain things, and I guess I can’t control the way people perceive me.” Zeroing back to the pressures on The Archies, Khushi said, “Even before the first look of the film was released, there were certain impressions about the series. People will have an opinion no matter what you do. So, might as well just work hard, and do your best.”
