Karisma Kapoor took ‘for granted’ that she’d be cast in Andaaz, producer says she didn’t hold a grudge after Priyanka Chopra was chosen
Karisma Kapoor didn't begrudge producer Suneel Darshan for not casting her in Andaaz, and choosing Priyanka Chopra instead.
Karisma Kapoor had worked with Suneel Darshan on several films. Filmmaker Suneel Darshan said that Karisma Kapoor, with whom he collaborated on several projects, took it ‘for granted’ that she’d be at the top of his list when he was casting for films. She also assumed that she’d star in Andaaz, which eventually went to then-newcomer Priyanka Chopra. But, Suneel revealed in a new interview, she was gracious enough to help promote the film and didn’t hold any grudges.
Speaking to Zoom Entertainment, Suneel Darshan said that he has a close relationship with the Kapoor family, and that it stems from the respect that he has for Karisma and Kareena Kapoor’s mother, Babita, who raised them single-handedly. He admitted that he didn’t break the news to either Babita or Karisma that he was going with Priyanka for Andaaz, but the eventually ‘got to know’.
He said, “Karisma didn’t need to call me ever, she took things for granted. My relationship with the Kapoors was so unique. Once, at a party, I heard someone call out, ‘Humare anndata aagaye (Our provider is here)’, and I turned around and saw that it was Rishi Kapoor. I had a deep relationship with both Karisma and Kareena because I admired their mother. And I respected the bravery with which she brought both her girls up. It was commendable.”
Even Babita, Suneel said, was sure that he’d cast Karisma in Andaaz. Asked how he broke the news to them, Suneel smiled wryly and said, “I… They got to know.” He continued, “But I’ll tell you a beautiful thing. They never held a grudge. Karisma was the chief guest at one function for the film, and Bebo was the chief guest for another.” In the same interview, Suneel also revealed that Rani Mukerji wanted the role as well.
But he eventually cast Priyanka Chopra, on the condition that she fixes her nose. He said that she asked for a month, which he gave her, and she turned up for work in time. Priyanka, on her part, has maintained that she underwent a nose surgery not for cosmetic reasons, but to fix a medical problem.
