Karisma Kapoor recalls how her ‘friendship, chemistry’ with Govinda blossomed during Coolie No 1

Karisma Kapoor, who made her Bollywood debut when she was just 16, went on to become a superstar in the 1990s. Karisma and Govinda were a loved on-screen jodi and the two appeared in many hit films like Raja Babu, Coolie No 1, Saajan Chale Sasural, Haseena Maan Jaayegi and Hero No 1, among others. In a recent interview, the actress recalled shooting for the Coolie No 1 song, “Main Toh Raste Se Ja Raha Tha”.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Karisma Kapoor as going through a bunch of throwback photos, one of them was from Coolie No 1. Looking at the photo, Karisma got nostalgic and said, “This is Coolie No 1 and I think it is one of my initial songs (Main To Raste Se Ja Raha Tha) with Chi Chi Bhaiya. We actually shot ‘Husn Hai Suhana’ before this. I think by then, we had struck a chemistry and a friendship. This was kind of my first massy song.”

Coolie No 1 was one of Karisma Kapoor’s earlier hits. The film, directed by David Dhawan, was an unofficial remake of the Tamil film Chinna Mapillai. The film was a box office hit and is still considered one of the most popular films of the 1990s. The film was later remade with Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan but did not get a positive response.
