Priya Sachdev claims Rs 1900 cr transferred to Karisma Kapoor’s children as they say ‘blindsided’ by Sunjay Kapur’s ‘suspiciously timed’ will: Rs 30,000 cr estate dispute

Karisma Kapoor's children, Kiaan and Samaira, have alleged that they were blindsided by a suspicious will that surfaced weeks after their father Sunjay Kapur's demise, leaving them out of their inheritance. They were earlier assured there was no will.

Amid the ongoing battle over the late Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate, his children Samaira and Kiaan have moved the Delhi High Court, challenging a will that they claim is ‘suspiciously timed’. The will surfaced weeks after their father’s sudden death of a heart attack in London earlier this year, and allegedly disinherits them entirely. Instead, his wife Priya Sachdev Kapur stands to inherit the entire estate. She, however, in a hearing on Wednesday, claimed that Rs 1900 crore have already been transferred to Karisma’s children. Sunjay was married to Samaira and Kiaan’s mother, Karisma Kapoor, from 2003 to 2016. He died in June.

According to a source close to the family, the case “highlights the fragility of inheritance laws and family rights in India.” They noted that “the children of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur have raised objections over a suspiciously timed will,” after having been assured that there was no will at all. But they were ‘blindsided’ when one surfaced seven weeks later, and stated that he had left “everything to his third wife, Priya Kapur.”

The source continued, “As per documents available, the timing seems suspicious: the will is dated just 11 weeks before his death, and merely a day after his funeral Priya Kapur stepped in as Managing Director of the company. The children, meanwhile, were denied any information about their father’s personal assets and as per reports, and yet to receive a copy of such will. This unfolding dispute speaks to power, secrecy, and the rights of children excluded from succession, with potential implications for many families facing similar struggles in India’s corporate and personal succession battles.”

However, in a hearing in the case on September 10, Priya Sachdev Kapoor, represented by senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, told Justice Jyoti Singh that “For all this crying and weeping that is going on, plaintiffs received Rs 1,900 crores from the trust.” Priya was referring to the Rani Kapur Trust, which is the Kapur family’s trust. The deceased’s mother (Rani Kapur) also created a trust… about 5 days before (this) suit (by Karisma Kapoor’s children), under that aspect, Rs 1900 cr worth of asset has been transmitted to the two children (Samaira and Kiaan). They’re the beneficiaries of Rs 1900 cr…I’m (Priya) the last wife of deceased…,” the lawyer said.

Earlier this week, Samaira and Kiaan moved the Delhi HC, challenging the will. Previously, the were not allowed to speak at their father’s funeral in Delhi, which they attended with their mother, her sister Kareena Kapoor, and Kareena’s husband, Saif Ali Khan. Earlier, Sunjay Kapur’s sister, Mandhira, accused Priya of getting her mother, Rani Kapur, to sign certain papers “behind locked doors” while Priya was appointed the Managing Director of the Kapur family business, Sona Comstar.

Previously, Priya had spoken warmly about having Samaira and Kiaan as a part of their ‘blended family’. “We have four children — Samaira, the oldest, then Safira, Kiaan, and my and Sunjay’s son, Azarias. It’s a blended family. When my son Azarias was born, he was the glue. He brought the family together because he is half them and half Safira. Our two daughters are very close — Samaira and Safira. We all have grown to love and appreciate each other,” she said in a podcast appearance.
