Karan Johar has often publicly heaped praises on films and shows he’s loved, from Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s blockbuster 12th Fail to Sudip Sharma’s thriller show Kohrra. Now, he’s all praise for Mohit Suri’s romantic drama Saiyaara, starring Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday in their debut film.

“I don’t remember the last time I felt like this after watching a film. Tears flowing and yet the feeling of immense joy… Joy for the fact that a love story has conquered the silver screen and made the nation fall in love,” wrote Johar on Instagram. He’s made a career out of directing memorable love stories like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010), Student of the Year (2012), Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), and most recently, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023).

“Proudest that my Alma mater @yrf has bought love back!!! Back to the movies …. Back to our Industry…. Adi I love you and feel so proud to say that I am a YRF student for life! @awidhani what a debut as producer!!! That ball is now officially out of the park,” Johar added. Saiyaara is produced by Akshaye Widhani under the banner of Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films. Johar began his career as an assistant director to Chopra in his 1995 seminal romantic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Ahaan is the cousin of Ananya Panday, whom Johar launched with his 2019 production, Punit Malhotra’s campus caper Student of the Year 2. Ananya has regularly collaborated with Johar’s banner Dharma Productions since then, in films like Gehraiyaan (2022), Liger (2022), Kesari Chapter 2, and the upcoming Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri and Chaand Mera Dil. She also made her OTT debut with his production Call Me Bae last year, which has been renewed for another season by Prime Video India.

This association promoted a troll to call Johar “nepo babies ka daijaan” (nanny of nepo babies) in the comment section. But Johar didn’t sit quiet. He hit back with a comment: “Chup kar!!! Ghar baithe baithee negativity mat paal! Do bachon ka kaam dekh !! Aur khud kuch kaam kar!!!” (Shut up! Don’t breed negativity sitting at home! Watch the work of the two kids! And do some work yourself).

Saiyaara has become the highest opening film starring newcomers in Hindi cinema. It’s earned Rs 83 crore over its opening weekend.
