Sometimes, trolling can lead to love. Or at least, can get one the title of a love story. Filmmaker Karan Johar says his latest Prime Video series Love Storiyaan gets its name from the highly-discussed line from the track Kesariya, which featured in his production Brahmastra.

The 2022 film, headlined by Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, had a chartbuster music by Pritam– but if one thing stood out for the soundtrack, and spilled into viral trending and baffled hashtags, was the line ‘Love Storiyaan’ from Amitabh Bhattacharya penned love anthem “Kesariya”.

The abrupt use of Hindi-English words in what is a tender romantic track had thrown people off, something which Karan Johar said worked for them when they were finding a name for the new series.

During a special screening of the series organised by MAMI in association with Prime Video, Karan opened up about how he looks at love stories and said, “The most poignant childhood memory I have is of loving the song ‘Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya’. That emotion stayed with me right up till Rock Aur Rani, where they sing ‘Ishq Se Badh Ke Dharm Kya’.

“That was an interpretation of ‘Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya’. Every time I see a love story, it deeply resonates with me. When I see two people in a relationship, fighting all odds to come victoriously together… Love Storiyaan was always so exciting. We have to thank Amitabh Bhattacharya, without whom we would not have had this title. The much trolled line from the song became the beautiful title of our film,” he added.

A Dharmatic Entertainment Production, the series features six real-life couples from across the country and their stories of love, hope, happiness, and triumph over all adversities.

The series is conceptualised by Somen Mishra along with Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Mishra serving as executive producers. It is inspired by stories featured on India Love Project, with each of the episodes in the six-part series told through the lens of a different director –Shazia Iqbal (Homecoming) Akshay Indikar (Raah Sangharsh Ki) Archana Phadke (Faasley), Collin D’Cunha (Love Beyond Labels), Hardik Mehta (An Unsuitable Girl) and Vivek Soni (Love On Air).

Somen Mishra, who was also present at the screening along with the real life couples, said his job was to pick the directors with the aim to get a “diverse background”.

“So directors who have done documentaries, fiction, those who are from film school, those who are not, all of them were picked. Once you see their work, you will realise how they come from different backgrounds and represent those stories. They had to pick stories that resonated with them at a personal level. They took it ahead from there,” he added. Love Storiyaan is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
