Karan Johar responds to fan who didn’t like seeing Jaya Bachchan as ‘such a nasty’ character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
Director Karan Johar was featured as a guest at the Express Adda, where he was asked why he cast Jaya Bachchan as such a nasty character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Legendary actor Jaya Bachchan received praise for her performance in director Karan Johar‘s recent hit film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. She was seen in the role of Rocky’s (Ranveer Singh) grandmother Dhanalakshmi Randhawa, the matriarch of the wealthy Randhawa family. Jaya’s success lay in the fact that many despised her role, and one such fan expressed his distaste for the character to Karan at the recent Express Adda event in Mumbai.
During the audience interaction segment, a fan said that while he loved the film, he had a grudge against Karan for casting Jaya Bachchan as such a nasty character. He probed the filmmaker’s reasoning behind the casting choice, and Karan said that it was an intentional move. “Sir, it was actually to cast against type. She has such a wonderful image on and off the screen. She is a mother figure to me. So, when I wanted to cast against type, I thought it would be a great role for her to go against what she has done. She is like goody… that was her personality on celluloid. So, sometimes it is nice to shake things up.”
Another criticism was made against the film during Karan’s interaction. He was asked why the mother-son relationship in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani lacked Karan’s trademark touch. “You are right,” said Karan, and added, “That was where the edit of the film came in the way. It was certainly a long film…two hours and forty-eight minutes. We had to cut out many scenes of the son and the mother. We had to make many sacrifices. So, that relationship was sliced on the edit table. I am a momma’s boy… I get that. Let’s just face it, 90 per cent of Indian men are momma’s boys. The other ten per cent is in denial. So, that portion, unfortunately, got edited out.”

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, also starring Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, and Tota Roy Chowdhury, has become a superhit comeback for the director, as it had been seven years since he made a feature film. Karan hasn’t announced his next directorial venture, but has said that he wants to direct an action film next.
