Karan Johar answers if he edits controversial Koffee with Karan bits, says guests more worried about rapid fire: ‘Nobody wants PR nightmare’
While the first few seasons of Koffee with Karan featured guests answering its controversial rapid-fire round head on, there has been an obvious guarded attitude today.
If extra tea is spilt on Karan Johar’s Koffee with Karan, does the filmmaker-host edit it out? Karan Johar says he respects the opinions of his guests who appear on his popular celebrity talk show, even if he knows that it may whip up a storm.
Koffee with Karan, now in its 8th season, is known to offer a glimpse into the lives of movie stars, but also finds itself entangled in heated social discourse when the guests often say something that doesn’t land well.
But Karan says nothing of “consequence” is edited out of the final output that the viewers see. “I have been asked by the team much more than I have said to cut things out. I have never wanted to cut stuff out,” Karan said during a special media interaction on Monday evening.

“I’ve never wanted to cut stuff out because I feel everybody protects your interest much more than I’ve, myself. I’ve kept things that maybe in retrospect I shouldn’t have but I feel when somebody comes and says something and I’ve a natural response, I have to keep it all. We cut out the boring banter which doesn’t add up to anything. But things of consequence we have never cut out.”
The filmmaker hot said he has never asked to remove anything that even he has said that is “too personal” or an opinion, even when he feels it will have “repercussions and ramifications.”
“It’s all there. There’s proof of that. You have seen stuff that you can turn out and tell me, ‘Yeh rakha kyu hai?’. We are still bearing the brunt of it. But I’ve kept it because they are your guests, and woh aake kuch dil se, dimag se kehte hai, aur jo bhi kehte hai, unhone kaha hai, main woh nahi nikal sakta hoon. That’s the way I respect guests on ‘Koffee with Karan’.”
During the event, Karan was also asked about rapid fire– the show’s most juicy segment which often leads to controversy. While the first few seasons of Koffee with Karan featured guests talking the segment head on, there has been an obvious guarded attitude of the guests when it comes to rapid fire today.

Karan says he is aware of that but can’t help it as everyone is way too cautious in the age of internet, where everyone is “sensitive” about what is being spoken.
“The sad thing is people are much more worried now than they were in the first few seasons. Nobody wants a PR nightmare. Everyone is so careful that you have to make sure that you change the language of rapid fire so that you will get something. There were times when people have answered with abandon, like most underrated and most overrated, and answers were flowing. Today, I won’t answer those so how can I expect them?
“We all have to be somewhere… we all have built a sensitive climate. Social media has made us so much more sensitized with sensitivity. So, everyone is sensitive about what they are saying, what they are expected to say, fan clubs get angry, I don’t want any of that. Eventually, a talk show is meant to be fun. I’m inviting them and they come for their absolute love for me and the relationship with me. I’ve to protect that. If you are calling a guest, you don’t want them to go back with a feeling that I’ve a bad stomach, you want them to go back with the feeling that they are well taken care of,” he added.
The next episode of the Disney Plus Hotstar show will feature actor Kiara Advani and Vicky Kaushal, both of whom Karan Johar directed in his segment of the anthology Lust Stories.
