Filmmaker Karan Johar‘s movies are known for their strong character development. But in his latest release, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, the audience missed seeing the bond between Rocky, played by Ranveer Singh, and his mother Punam, played by Kshitee Jog. However, Karan recently revealed that being a ‘mumma’s boy’ himself, he made sure to flesh out Rocky’s relationship with his mom, but it got “sliced at the edit table” because the movie was becoming too long. He said that he believes that 90% of Indian men can be described as ‘mumma’s boys’.

Karan was asked about Rocky and Punam’s bond in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani at the Express Adda, held in Mumbai on Monday. He told Anant Goenka, Executive Director, The Indian Express, “That’s where the edit of the film came in the way. There were many scenes of Ranveer and his mother which had to be cut out. There were certain sacrifices made for the larger conflicts of the film. That relationship was sliced on the editing table.”

Further in the conversation, Karan talked about the possibility of a “hot, attractive, college-going girl” falling in love with a ‘mumma’s boy’ in a Dharma movie. The filmmaker said, “There are so many hot, attractive girls who love mumma’s boys. The problem arrives when they meet the mumma (laughs). Mumma’s boys are sheltered, and protected; therefore they also know how to treat their partner. I don’t think the attraction level is the problem. The problem happens when things eventually move and the mumma has to realise that that relationship is different from the one she has with her son. The problem comes when that baggage comes on to that relationship.”

Karan added, “I am a mumma’s boy. Let’s just face it. 90 per cent of Indian men are mumma’s boys. The other 10 per cent are in denial. We are all somewhere mamma’s boys, and they have a huge influence in all our decisions, lives and in our general being.”

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, also starring Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Anjali Anand, Tota Roy Chowdhury, and Churni Ganguly, among others, became a blockbuster hit and amassed a collection of Rs 145.15 cr.
