Former cricket captain Kapil Dev, who famously led Team India to its maiden World Cup victory in 1983, spoke about the recent sports drama film 83, which dramatised the World Cup adventure and starred Ranveer Singh in the lead role as Kapil. In an appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Kapil said that it would have been ‘wrong’ to give Ranveer advice on how to play him on screen, and said that the actor spent time with him to understand his mannerisms and speech patterns.

He also revealed that he has watched the film more than once, but stopped after he became too emotional. Kapil said that he believes in the concept of detachment, and made a conscious effort to not become too affected by the film’s story. “I watched the film two-three times. I liked it. How could I not? If a film is made on you, and it shows you in such a positive light, it’s difficult to dislike. My team relived their lives. Our children and grandchildren saw what we did. It’s wonderful,” he said, thanking the cast and crew.

Asked if he became emotional while watching the film, he said, “Yes, I did. But I stopped watching after that.” He explained, “I’d already seen it more than once, and at the end of the day, we know what we did, how many times can we watch ourselves? It’s about detachment, you have to let it go.” Asked to list the scenes that made him the most emotional, Kapil said, “There were a few. The most emotional scene was the one where Man Singh (coach) gave a salute at the ground (in the match against Zimbabwe). When they refused to give us tickets, I think that was a very emotional moment.” Kapil said that the Indian team hadn’t proven itself back then, which is why they were treated as second-class. But things have changed, and now, Indian cricket is among the most lucrative arenas in all of world sports.

Release at an unfortunate time just before the second lockdown, 83 could not recover its hefty costs theatrically. The film grossed under Rs 200 crore worldwide against a budget of over Rs 250 crore. It did, however, receive mostly positive reviews. In a recent appearance on Koffee with Karan, Ranveer addressed the film’s underperformance, and said, “Coming out of the pandemic, we had this beautiful film 83. It was just released at the wrong time.”
