Karan Johar’s debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, was one of the biggest hits of 1998, and it solidified SRK and Kajol’s status as one of the best on-screen couples in Bollywood. Over the years, Karan has criticised various elements of his debut film, especially its gender politics, and in a recent interview, Kajol said that if she was to direct the film, she would have changed one key thing about it.

While Kajol praised the film relentlessly in her conversation with Shubhankar Mishra, the actor did mention that if she was to direct the film, she would have changed the circumstances under which Rahul (Shah Rukh) falls in love with her character Anjali. Kajol also said that she was aware as to why people saw Rahul as a “red flag.” “For that time, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was perfect. Today, they say he was a red flag man. If I had to make that film today, I would have made that film with him not loving the woman in the saree, and loving her only once she wore workout clothes and started playing basketball with him,” she said and added, “Maybe that would be the change in the entire script. But I think there were too many nice scenes in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. There were lovely scenes.”

In the same chat, Kajol was also asked about her old feud with Karan Johar which started after Karan’s film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay were to release on the same day. The feud lasted for a while and Karan also wrote about it in his biography, An Unsuitable Boy. However, the duo resolved their differences shortly afterwards, and since then, Kajol has appeared in multiple episodes of Karan’s chat show, Koffee with Karan.

When asked about the same during this conversation, Kajol said that one can’t always avoid fights but added that they are now stronger than before. “I think you shouldn’t avoid it. I think friends fight. We have come out of it and we are better than fine. So I think things that are broken, and kind of get fixed, are stronger than before and look better as well,” she said.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai also starred Rani Mukerji.
