Sanjay Gupta, who has directed films like Kaante, Zinda, Musafir among others, recently claimed that despite the accusations that Kaante is an alleged remake of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, he has never seen the Tarantino film. Sanjay, in a recent interview, said that he started watching Reservoir Dogs on many occasions but has never managed to finish it.

Talking on the YouTube channel Timeout with Ankit, Sanjay said, “Yes, of course, Kaante is inspired by Reservoir Dogs but the fact is, I have not seen Reservoir Dogs. I haven’t seen the film. I am telling you, I don’t need to lie. I am telling you why, because I found it boring. Every time I used to start it, I would turn it off after 10-15 minutes. I felt it’s just a bunch of guys talking talking so I have actually never seen that entire film.”

Reservoir Dogs released in 1992, and Kaante, directed by Gupta released in 2002. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Majrekar, Lucky Ali among others. Gupta said that when a woman filmmaker alleged that Kaante was a “frame to frame remake of Reservoir Dogs”, he wondered if she had even seen his film. “I just wanted to ask her one question, I said Reservoir Dogs is about six men in a warehouse. That is reel number 12 of Kaante,” he said implying that Kaante’s story goes beyond the story of Reservoir Dogs.

He then claimed that Tarantino apparently prefers Kaante over his own film. “So Tarantino himself has gone on record and stated that he prefers Kaante over Reservoir Dogs and he said ‘I love how he has brought in all the back stories of the characters’. Every time he meets a bunch of Indian filmmakers, the first thing he talks about is Kaante,” he said and added, “He doesn’t need to say that some kid sitting in Bombay has made a better film than mine but he says it.” He then continued that people are “ignorant” and don’t know that “Reservoir Dogs itself is a remake of a Hong Kong film, City on Fire.”
