Jugal Hansraj rejected Masoom initially as he was scared of being called a ‘crybaby’ at school: ‘I thought everyone would laugh at me’
Jugal Hansraj said that he had rejected Masoom when he heard it first because he was scared that everyone would laugh at him.

Jugal Hansraj, who first made a mark as a child artiste in Shekhar Kapur’s Masoom, recently shared that he first rejected the film because he believed that his character Rahul was crying a lot in the film. And Jugal was scared that the kids at school would call him a ‘crybaby’.
In a conversation with YouTuber Sal Ahmed, Jugal said, “When I heard the story, I thought this kid cries a lot in the film. Everyone in my school would laugh at me and call me a crybaby. And I said no. But Shekhar was insistent that he wants me in the film.” Jugal recalled that one day, Shekhar took him for one of the music recording sessions where composer RD Burman was working on the songs of the film and that day, he was convinced that he wanted to be a part of the movies. The film had songs like ‘Lakdi Ki Kathi’, ‘Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi’, among others.
“I thought this was so much fun, and films are fun and I should do this. I was a kid and I actually had a lot of fun,” he recalled. The film was made in 50 days in a small budget and was widely appreciated at the time.
Jugal said that him and his family had decided that they would step away from the movies after Masoom as they did not come from a film background. “But there were so many offers at that time because the film was a bug success. We did not take many offers except there was a call from Dharmendra,” he said.
“Dharam ji expressed his desire. He said he watched Masoom and really liked it. He said, ‘This boy is very cute. Whenever there is a nice role in my film, you have to send him. I promise I will take care of him like my own son’. And that’s what happened. I did four films with Dharmendra. He made sure that my shoot was only during my summer holidays so I don’t have to miss school,” he recalled.
Apart from a few films with Dharamendra, Jugal was also a part of Subhash Ghai’s Karma which also starred Dilip Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Nutan, and many others.
After growing up, Jugal was famously a part of films like Papa Kehta Hain and Mohabbatein.
