John Abraham says would survive on Rs 6 lunch, invested all his money in mutual funds: ‘That is where my career started’
John Abraham recounted early days of his career when he earned Rs 6,500 as an MBA graduate. He shared how he would spend only Rs 6 in lunch and would save money to invest in mutual funds.

John Abraham, who is eagerly anticipating the release of his upcoming film Vedaa, recently sat down for an in-depth podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, where he discussed various aspects of his life and career. Reflecting on his early days, John recounted his time just after completing his MBA when he earned Rs 6,500 as a media planner. He also reminisced about winning a modeling competition judged by his Pathaan co-star Shah Rukh Khan, along with Gauri Khan and Karan Johar.
Recalling his humble beginnings, John shared, “After MBA my salary was Rs 6,500. I started from there. I was a media planner. Then I got offered to take part in the Gladrags competition and my judges were Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan, Karan Johar, Karan Kapoor. I won that competition and I got Rs 40,000. It’s like a full circle. That was a huge amount of money for me. My take home salary at that time was Rs 11,500.”
When asked how would he spend his salary, John revealed, “My expenses were very less. My lunch would cost Rs 6 and I would have 2 chapatis and dal fry this was in 1999. I would skip dinner as I would be working late in the office. My expenses including petrol for my bike, I didn’t have a mobile, I had a train pass and the little food I had, that’s all. I used to save my money and invest in equity based mutual funds. That’s where my career started.”
John also emphasised the importance of not just earning money, but using it responsibly. “We live in a capitalist society. It is good to make money, to earn money. You should have the drive to earn money and if you don’t have that drive then what are you doing. There is no harm in earning money but important thing is what are you doing with that money. That is why Corporate Social Responsibility was formed to tell people to put some money in charity,” he said. The actor also expressed how philanthropy is prevalent in USA and Europe but in India rich people have to be pushed to do so.
Vedaa will release in theatres on August 15. The film also stars Sharvari in lead roles. It is directed by Nikkhil Advani.
