And it gets even better when the said person is not one to let go of a slight without hitting back with enough gusto. National Award-winning writer Javed Akhtar is known for his refreshingly candid statements, and not allowing anyone else to dictate his narrative. This aspect of his persona came to the fore when he responded in kind to two inciting statements made after his post about Virat Kohli and his performance in the India vs Pakistan match in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.
Sharing his jubilation over the victory, Javed wrote, “Virat Kohli, zindabad!!! We all are so so so proud of you !!!” Now, one might think how can anyone twist this innocuous statement, but some netizens have a way of getting around things. In response to this statement, a user wrote, “Javed. Babar ka baap Kohli hai. Bolo, Jai Shree Ram!” This was in connection with the religion of Javed, and the glaring islamophobia.
Exhibiting a sense of incredible restraint, the legendary writer, commented, “Main to sirf yeh kahoonga ke tum eik neech insaan ho aur neech hi maroge. Tum kya jaano desh prem kya hota hai (I want to say that you are a petty person and you will die petty too. What do you know about patriotism).” But he didn’t reserve the same candour for the netizen who said, “Aaj suraj kahaa se nikla. Andar se dukh hoga aapko to (Where from did the sun rise today? You must be feeling sad).”
Brushing off all restraint, Javed exploded with a thunderous response that read, “Beta jab tumhare baap dada angrez ke jootay chaat rahe thay tab mere aazadi ke liye jail aur kala paani mein thay. Meri ragon mein desh premiyon ka khoon hai aur tumhaari ragon mein angrez ke naukaron ka khoon hai. Iss antar ko bhoolo nahin (Son, when your father and grandfather were licking the boots of the British, mine were in jail and Kaala Paani (a prison in Port Blair). I have the blood of patriots in my veins, whereas yours have the blood of servants of the British. Never forget the difference).”
These comments and the writer’s response became a conversation topic for a while even as congratulatory messages poured in for the Indian side that sealed its position in the the semis of the Champions Trophy currently underway in Pakistan and Dubai.
