Filmmaker Karan Johar has been quite vocal about his production banner Dharma Productions receiving criticism for his commercial films (Nadaaniyan – Ibrahim Ali Khan, Khushi Kapoor), while little recognition for his artistic projects (Homebound – Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, Vishal Jethwa). The Neeraj Ghaywan directorial has received global acclaim, with standing ovations at many international film festivals, including Cannes and IIFM. Now, before the premiere of their movie at TIFF, the cast of Homebound spoke to Sucharita Tyagi in an interview. They addressed the concern that Karan Johar got more trouble for backing their film, instead of being rewarded.

During the candid chat, Ishaan was asked about how it felt that Dharma Productions threw their full might behind this unique film, and he replied, “It would be wrong to not first credit Mr Karan Johar. I said this to him recently as well..that if all films with a big heart and artistic endeavour had a nurturer like him, that would be the dream. Everybody who is a part of the film really believes in it and had some kind of feeling for it. The film had a real soul. It’s because of Karan this film was made, so hats off to him!”

Janhvi continued, “It is genuinely a testament to the fact that what matters to this man is cinema and art, and not just commerce, which is such a rarity in this day and age. There was no real requirement for him to put his money, name, and backing. It won’t even come to the forefront but we know the amount of battles that he fought continuously for this film. It probably put him in more trouble than it has rewarded him. But, he will continue to do so.”

The actor then praised her co-star Ishaan Khatter for his performance in the film and contributions to the industry. “I think that he is maybe one of the most talented actors we have in our country and for whatever reason, I don’t think he has been given as much credit as he deserves within Indian cinema and whatever commercial aspect. So, to see him on that stage and to see a performance like this being witnessed and appreciated by the world, I felt like good work eventually gets recognition. I don’t think there was anyone who was more deserving of that recognition,” Janhvi expressed.

She added, “Same with Vishal. He has auditioned his a** off for this film. His journey from how he started getting into this to how he is dealing with being in all of these new scenarios, and the performance that he has given, the kind of man that I have seen him turn into for the past couple of months. He never lost sight of who he is, it has made me so proud of him. To see him on this world stage killing it…he did a Gujarati folk rap in one his his early interviews. I was so thrilled.”

Janhvi Kapoor also appreciated Homebound‘s director Neeraj Ghaywan for his honesty as a person. “Neeraj sir is the most honest filmmaker in our country, hands down. He practices what he preaches. He is a good man, and I have so much value for him. That stuff needs to rewarded. It should be rewarded. I was just so happy to be tugged along the way. It was a real thrill to be a part of this film,” she concluded.
