Ira Khan says parents Aamir Khan-Reena Dutta were triggers for her depression: ‘They made it seem like divorce wasn’t a big deal’

Ira Khan said that though Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta's divorce was 'amicable', it did leave an impact on her mental health.

Aamir Khan and his first wife Reena Dutta’s daughter, Ira Khan has often spoken about her battle with depression. Recently, she mentioned that one of the triggers of her depression was the divorce of her parents. Ira said that though the divorce was ‘amicable’, it did leave an impact on her mental health. She was diagnosed with clinical depression over five years ago, about which she opened up in a social media post.

Speaking to ETimes, Ira shared that according to her therapist, her parents’ divorce is one of the triggers of her depression. But she also mentioned that she doesn’t ‘blame’ them for her mental health condition but she does feel that both Reena and Aamir made her believe that getting divorced “was not a big deal”.

Because of her parents ‘amicable’ divorce, Ira formed some perceptions in her head but never discussed them with anyone. Hence, she “blames herself” for suffering from depression and believes that one has to be sad to receive love from others. However, now Ira aims to be happy in life and for that, she has to “systematically undo” everything she has done until now.

While she is on her path to recovery, she has the support of her parents and Kiran Rao. She has a chat group with them and reaches out to them in her hour of need. Her fiance, Nupur Shikhare is also one of her strongest support systems and she thinks she is “lucky” to have in her life.

Ira has recently launched the Agastu Foundation in an attempt to provide mental health support.

She got engaged to Nupur last year. But the couple has not yet decided when do they want to get married. Whenever it would be, it would be on January 3, as Ira told Etimes that it was on that date that she and Nupur kissed for the first time.
