Ila Arun says she was informed about Crew’s ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ five minutes before song launch: ‘I am dumbfounded, it’s ethically wrong’

Ila Arun said that she did not want to create a controversy over the new 'Choli Ke Peeche' from The Crew but said it was ethically wrong of the company to remix the song.

Kareena Kapoor-starrer Crew recently released their brand new version of “Choli Ke Peeche” and brought back the iconic vocals of Ila Arun who sang the original number. But Ila isn’t too happy with how this panned out. In a recent interview, the veteran singer shared that the music company did not ask for her permission, and did not even inform her before making the new version. In fact, she shared, that she was informed only five minutes before the launch of the new song. The entire experience has left her “dumbfounded” as she finds this process of recreating songs “ethically wrong.”

In a chat with India Today, Ila Arun insisted that she shares a great relationship with the music label Tips and had they called her prior, she would still not be in a position to refuse them. She mentioned, “I would be in no position to refuse, but ethically, it’s wrong. If they had just spoken to me about it, it would have felt good.” Ila said she got to know about the recreation just five minutes before the launch of the song as they sought her blessing. She said, “They called me five minutes before the launch of the song and asked my blessing. What else I could do, except give them my blessings? I was dumbfounded but couldn’t ask them why have you done this? So my reaction to the song is exactly what Alka Yagnik’s reaction is.”

Praising the artists associated with the song, composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal, lyric writer Anand Bakshi and performers Madhuri Dixit and Neena Gupta, Ila described the song as “iconic” and said that while companies feel that recreations reach a younger and new audience, she questioned why this needs to be done in the first place. “They say it’s a new thing to reach out to the younger generation. But why should we? That’s what I feel. You don’t have to give them what they are looking for. Why can’t they just create their own number? Young directors should create energetic, powerful songs that will be liked by the younger generation,” she said.

Ila said that she does not want to create any controversy and said that while everyone is complimenting her, she is actually shaken up by this entire experience. “The fact is that everyone is complimenting me that I am rocking, but am I not rocking, I am shaken up by this. Even the younger generation is calling me and telling me that my song has been recreated and Kareena Kapoor Khan is dancing to the number, but what can I do about that? I can only say I am dumfounded,” she said.

Like many artists before her, Ila Arun said that artistes associated with the original song must be kept in the loop and if the new song reaps any benefits, they must be shared with the original artistes as well. “In my opinion, if you want to recreate, you should work with the original artistes and keep them in the loop. And if you are making any profit, then they also should get compensation for it,” she said.

“Choli Ke Peeche” isn’t the only song that features Ila in this music album. Her song “Ghagra” also features in the album.
