Udta Punjab and its depiction of the prevalent drug menace in Punjab and the usage of crude language may shock many, if the film’s protagonist is to be believed. “I felt worried for my brother and family when I read the script. Most times as actors we show the beautiful side of life but real life is different. This film talks about real issues,” said Shahid.

Talking about the entire censor board controversy that clouded the movie, Shahid said, “I think whoever wanted this film to not get released they have helped the film become larger than ever. We were scared two days back and you go though self-introspection when something like this happens. I am happy that we have the right to express ourselves now.”

For Shahid, Udta Punjab has given him an opportunity to be part of a film that delivers a social message. “Abhishek (Chaubey) has made this film with a lot of sincerity. If there is a problem in society, you have to talk about it. The message that we are delivering is that drugs are not good. Very few films will give me an opportunity to spread social awareness.”
