Honey Singh addresses rumours of Shah Rukh Khan splitting his head open with a slap: ‘I thought I was going to die’

Around a decade ago, a rumour about Shah Rukh Khan having slapped Honey Singh for misbehaving at a US concert began doing the rounds. In his Netflix documentary, Honey dismisses the rumours.

Rapper Honey Singh cleared the air about the rumour that Shah Rukh Khan smacked him during a tour of the United States, leading to him getting stitches on his head. In the new documentary film Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous, the rapper said that the rumours hurt him, because Shah Rukh has shown nothing but kindness over the years. Honey performed the hit song “Lungi Dance” for the SRK-starrer Chennai Express, and was called to tour along with the star. He agreed to the offer, even though he was overworked and exhausted at the time.

In the documentary, Honey says that this was the first time that he noticed something wrong with his mind. “Now, nine years later, let me tell you what really happened. Nobody knows what I’m going to tell you on camera now,” Honey said.

He said that he was adamant that he didn’t want to perform one evening, but was being forced to. To get out of performing, he shaved his head, and made a call to his family back home in India. When that failed, Honey said, he smashed a cup on his head. That’s what caused the injury, and the subsequent rumours of Shah Rukh having attacked him. He said, “Someone started the rumour that Shah Rukh Khan slapped me. That man loves me, he’ll never raise his hand on me.”

Honey explained, “When they took me to Chicago for the show, I said, ‘I don’t want to perform’. I was sure that I was going to die during that show. Everyone told me that I should get ready, but I refused. My managers came over, and they said, ‘Why aren’t you getting ready?’ I said, ‘I’m not going’. I went to the washroom, took a trimmer, and I shaved my hair off. I said, ‘How will I perform now?’ They said, ‘Wear a cap and perform’.” Honey grabbed on to his chair, and refused to budge. He started yelling that he doesn’t want to perform. “There was a coffee mug lying there. I picked it up and smashed it on my head.”

Honey’s sister said that the incident convinced her that he should be brought back to India immediately. She recalled receiving a concerning phone call from Honey, and narrated her side of the story through tears. Sitting next to her, Honey’s mother and father became emotional as well, as his sister recalled the story. She said, “I was in my room. He messaged that something is not right with me. He said can you come on Skype. And then he said, ‘Mujhe please bacha lo, gudiya mujhe please bacha le’. And then he disconnected. I was trying to reach out to (his ex-wife) Shalini. She said, ‘He has to do this show. You convince him to do this show’. I said I can’t. He told me that he isn’t feeling okay and that something bad is happening. For three hours, there was no contact with them. Three hours later, I’m told that he’s in the hospital with stitches in his head.”

Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous is directed by Mozez Singh. The film follows Honey’s troubles with mental health and drug addiction, and his attempts to make a comeback. It was released on Netflix on December 20.
