Heeramandi casting director defends Sharmin Segal amid trolling: ‘She underwent whole process like other actors’
Heeramandi casting director, Shruti Mahajan, defended Sharmin Segal's portrayal of Alamzeb and explained that she followed the brief given to her.

Sharmin Segal has faced intense online trolling for her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi. In a recent interaction, the show’s casting director, Shruti Mahajan, defended Sharmin’s portrayal of Alamzeb and explained that she followed the brief given to her. Shruti, who has previously worked with SLB on Bajirao Mastani and Gangubai Kathiawadi, elaborated on the casting choices.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Shruti said, “There are a lot of people who liked her voice, and acting. They have said that she looks fresh and brings newness to the cast. People say that she doesn’t seem to belong to the world of Heeramandi or part of the world of courtesans. But that was the brief. It was all about her not belonging to the world, and not feel like she is a courtesan. That’s what we kept in mind”.
In the show, Sharmin Segal portrays the character of Alamzeb, the daughter of Mallikajaan, played by Manisha Koirala. The actor also faced accusations of nepotism, with many arguing that the substantial role should have gone to someone more deserving. Defending Sharmin on the same, Shruti Mahajan said, “She underwent the whole process just like other actors. The process for everyone was the same. They had to go through rounds of auditions, and look tests.”

During a recent appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show alongside fellow Heeramandi cast members Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Sanjeeda Shaikh, Sharmin revealed that she had to audition for her role as Alamzeb despite being Bhansali’s niece. When Kapil Sharma asked her, “Kya unhone aapka sach me audition liya tha ya aapne unko mamu banaya?” Sharmin replied that it was a grueling year-long process involving sixteen auditions. “Ek saal ke liye prepare kiya aur 16 baar auditions diye (I prepared for one year and gave 16 auditions for the role),” she said.
Sharmin Segal made her acting debut in 2019 with Malaal, which was produced by Bhansali Productions.
