Even Govinda’s kids ignore his advice; negative influence ruined his bond with David Dhawan, says Sunita Ahuja: ‘He’s stuck in the 90s’
Govinda's wife, Sunita Ahuja, blamed negative influences around the actor for ruining his relationship with filmmaker David Dhawan.

Govinda was one of the most bankable actors of the 90s, with his collaborations with filmmaker David Dhawan resulting in numerous iconic hits like Saajan Chale Sasural, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Hero No 1, Raja Babu, and many more. However, their successful partnership eventually fell apart after working together in 18 films. In a recent interaction, Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, blamed negative influences around the actor for ruining his relationship with David. She also revealed that Govinda is still stuck in the 90s, so much so that even their children don’t take his advice seriously.
Speaking on the YouTube channel Hindi Rush, Sunita said, “I always say David is like my father. Back then, actors used to have a lot of ‘chamchas’, and they would create misunderstandings. People became jealous seeing the partnership between David and Govinda. When you surround yourself with negative people, you’re bound to absorb their negativity.”
Sunita defended David Dhawan and said the filmmaker had never said anything wrong to Govinda but only advised him to adapt to changing times. “David didn’t say anything wrong. He said that in the 90s, solo-hero films worked, but that’s no longer the case. Rarely do they succeed today. David suggested that Govinda take up second-lead roles, but not insignificant ones. After all, he played a second lead in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and that wasn’t a bad choice. But people around Govinda would provoke him, saying, ‘You’re the hero.’ It makes me angry to see how these things happened. The people in Govinda’s circle weren’t good; they instigated him against.”
Addressing Govinda’s recent announcement about making a comeback, which he revealed on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Sunita shared her mixed feelings. “I think he has made some announcement about doing three films,” she said uncertainly. However, she added that she prefers to withhold her opinion until she hears more about the projects. “I say it on the face good or bad, I am not going to do chamchagiri whether you are my husband or Govinda. I am not ‘Waah waah’ production, I’m ‘sahi sahi’ production,” she said.
Sunita also opened up about their son Yashvardan Ahuja, who is set to make his Bollywood debut in 2025, and how he doesn’t follow Govinda’s career advice. “Nobody listens to Govinda’s advice because it’s stuck in the 90s. I give advice suited to 2024. We keep telling Govinda to move on from the 90s.”
