Fawad Khan says stardom is temporary, looks fade: ‘I am often told you look alright, so what?’

Fawad Khan, who was away from Indian cinema for around 8 years after the ban on Pakistanti artists after the 2016 Uri attack, is part of the supernatural series Barzakh.

Fawad Khan, the man who won several hearts with his charming look and acting skills in films like Khoobsurat, Kapoor & Sons, and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, is now a part of ZEE5 series Barzakh. With reports of the actor making a comeback in Indian films after a gap of 8 years, the popular Pakistani television star recently opened up about what he thinks of his looks as well as stardom. “I sometimes feel I wasn’t made for stardom”, said Fawad in a new interview.

Speaking about his latest supernatural series, Fawad in an interview with Mid-day also talked about his stardom. He said, “Mujhe ghabrahat hoti hai (I feel uneasy). I sometimes feel I wasn’t made for this. And I worry that if I take my stardom seriously, or notice the frills of fame, I will be addicted to it. I consciously stay away from it because aaj hai toh kal nahi (this is temporary). I don’t want to reach a pinnacle and then fall from there because the pain will be unbearable. I’d prefer it to be a light thud. Mujhe craft se ishq karne do (I love my craft). If I take my stardom so seriously, I will stop taking my job seriously. Best to remain unaware of it.”

Often having charmed his fans with his dashing looks, Fawad believes looks fade. In the same interview, he said, “I have tremendous Godsent luck. I am often told ‘haan thik dikhta hai, itna kya hai (you look alright, what’s the big deal)?’ People assume it’s modesty. It’s not. I am very realistic. Looks fade and I am grateful to all my fans, female fans. I am thankful that they have supported me so much and got me to where I am today. But I am just as scared of the men in their lives… so best to fear female adulation a tad.”

India put a ban on Pakistani artists working in India after the Uri terror attack in 2016. The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association made the resolution that they won’t work with Pakistani artists citing “security” and “patriotism” as their reasons to not allowing cross-border talent to perform in India. This led to artists like Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Atif Aslam not collaborate with their Indian counterparts. The ban, however, was called “a retrograde step in promoting cultural harmony, unity and peace” by the Bombay High Court.

Now, the actor is set to make a comeback in Indian films with a film starring Vaani Kapor and also show with Sony Liv. With these projects yet to being announced, Fawad was asked about his feeling to return after 8 years, he said, “I am picking up exactly from where I left off.” He further added, “I hope I am just as good at my craft, as I was when I was last here. I am seeking a lot from life. I had closed myself off for a while and I am stepping out into a different world than it was when I was not around. The challenges are different – I am not hunting for good scripts, I am looking for life experiences.”

Barzakh started to stream on Zee5 on 19 July.
