Mona Singh recalls crying over Laal Singh Chaddha’s failure at Aamir Khan’s house: ‘He said this is what movie business is about’

Mona Singh shared that she was emotionally shaken by the underperformance of Laal Singh Chaddha and went to Aamir Khan’s house to express her feelings.

Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha performed far below expectations at the box office, marking one of the more disappointing moments in the actor’s illustrious career. Despite being a heartfelt adaptation of Forrest Gump, the film struggled to find takers. Mona Singh, who played Aamir’s mother in the film, delivered a remarkable performance that was widely appreciated by critics. Yet, like much of the film itself, her work went under the radar amid the movie’s muted reception. In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, Mona opened up about how deeply the film’s performance affected her.

She recalled an emotional moment from the day of the release, when she visited Aamir’s house along with director Advait Chandan. “We did meet on the day of the release. Advait was there, we had gone to Aamir’s house. And I was crying, of course, I always begin to weep in such moments. And it’s for the good only, as it loosens up the heart, and cleanses your mind with all the worries. So I cried, and he told me ‘This is what the movie business is about, you get just one Friday to prove yourself.’ I was really like this is not done. That one Friday is the only day when people decide whether it’s good and bad, that’s so much pressure for anyone to take. That’s why I enjoy OTT now, people can watch your stuff whenever you want.”

Speaking further about OTT and, in fact, the love Laal Singh Chaddha received after its Netflix release, she said: “As I said, film not working commercially did bother me. And I in fact gave a lot of interviews at that time as well about it not doing well and that affecting me a lot. But I was sure, if not now, then later it will find its audience, especially when it gets an OTT release. And that’s what exactly happened, when it released digitally, people were suddenly so full of love and warmth. And understood what the values the film was talking about and just the simplicity it had. So I think later it got its due and life.”

Mona Singh was last seen in Aryan Khan’s debut show The Ba***ds of Bollywood and has a new show releasing this Friday called Thode Door Thode Paas.
