Yuva, shot simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil as Aayutha Ezhuthu, is celebrating its 20th anniversary of release. While the star cast of both the versions of the film were completely different, one actress who became an integral part of both Tamil and Hindi versions — Esha Deol. She was cast opposite Ajay Devgn in the Hindi version of the Mani Ratnam directorial film which also starred Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukerji, and opposite Suriya in Tamil — also co-starring Siddharth, R Madhavan, Trisha and Meera Jasmine.
On the award winning film completing 20 years, Esha took to her Instagram handle to share throwback photos from two decades ago with her co-stars, as well as from the Singapore premiere of the film. In her caption, the actress recalled how Yuva was her first ever film with Ajay Devgn, whom she would leave clueless by continuously talking to Mani Ratnam in Tamil, the mother tongue of her mom and veteran star Hema Malini.
Sharing photos with Ajay Devgn and Suriya, Esha Deol wrote, “20 years of Yuva & Aayutha Ezhuthu. Mani sir you are magic. Working with you on both the films in Tamil & Hindi was an absolute pleasure, a dream come true & extremely satisfying as an artist to have you direct me. Both my co stars @ajaydevgn & @actorsuriya were just perfect & wonderful to work with. I remember this was the first time I worked with AJ ( Ajay ) and how mani sir & I would talk to each other in Tamil all the time while discussing the scenes which left Ajay wondering what on earth was being said.”
Recalling her experience working with Suriya, Esha wrote, “Suriya I remember as a man of few words but once the cameras rolled we both were totally on fire in character full of life. The 3rd image I share is of the Premiere of yuva at Iifa in Singapore 22/5/2004 ( the entire star cast on stage ) Can’t believe it’s been 20 years of these 2 fantastic films I’m proud of being part of. Much gratitude.”
With Mani Ratnam directing both the versions of the film, the Hindi version of the film is written by Anurag Kashyap, while the Ponniyin Selvan director along with Sujatha wrote the Tamil version of the movie. Both films released on May 21, 2004, to positive reviews by critics and audience. The films were a commercial success at the box office. The Hindi version of the film bagged six awards at the 50th Filmfare Awards. Yuva was also a breakthrough for Abhishek Bachchan as it bagged him the Stardust Award for Actor of the Year – Male for his performance, a photo of which Amitabh Bachchan shared on his Instagram handle on May 23, recalling a very special anecdote on the 20th anniversary of the film.
Yuva or Aayutha Ezhuthu is loosely based on the life story of George Reddy, a scholar from Osmania University in Hyderabad.
