It has been one tumultuous ride for actor-filmmaker-politician Kangana Ranaut, who has been gearing up for the release of her upcoming directorial, Emergency, for a few months now. The film, which faced constant delays and rescheduling of release dates, is finally hitting the screens on January 17. The makers now released the trailer of the film, and it perfectly sums up what Emergency would be about.

The trailer starts off with Anupam Kher’s Jayaprakash Narayan writing to Kangana Ranaut’s Indira Gandhi reminding her that the PM chair is not just a throne anymore, but a raging lion whose roar would echo throughout the world. It primes the Prime Minister’s decision to declare an emergency, which is an important part of India’s post-independence history. The trailer is filled with shots of institutional brutality, systemic violence, and the ‘murder of democracy.’

On the other end of the spectrum is Indira Gandhi, who is billed by the makers as “India’s most iconic… and controversial leader” who vehemently declares that SHE is the cabinet. The stage is set for a film that promises to be a deep dive into the dark pages of India’s history, and shed light on the machinations and the consequences of the former Prime Minister’s actions.

In the trailer, we also see the likes of Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Shreyas Talpade), Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (Milind Soman), and Sanjay Gandhi (Vishak Nair), who seem to be the perfect fit for those roles. They look the part, and also act the part. There is no doubt that Kangana looks the part, but mimicking the voice of Indira Gandhi makes things a bit odd. Probably, it would seem better in the film, but for now, it is clear that Emergency is set to paint a striking picture of how the former PM steadfastly believed that “India is Indira… Indira is India…”
