Does failure of Rock On 2, Force 2 mark an end to Bollywood’s obsession with sequels?
Bollywood sequels 2016: Vidya Balan's latest sequel, Kahaani 2 is also struggling to get profits at the box office.
The year 2016 saw a flop show of sequels. Films including Kahaani 2, Rock On 2 and others failed to impress the audience.

Cinegoers have been complaining about the lack of original ideas in Bollywood films for quite many years now. This year, Bollywood filmmakers went an extra mile to churn out newer versions of the old successful franchises. Hence, 2016 was being called the year of sequels from the very start. Yet, most of the second outings faced a debacle at the box office. Movies including Rock On 2, Force 2, Tum Bin 2 and now Kahaani 2 lured the audience and tried to cash in on the success of the brand. However, they failed to infuse new concepts, ideas and energy into the franchises.
Some movies like Rock On 2 saw arguments between original scriptwriters and the star cast. While makers of other films like Tum Bin 2 thought it was more important to reprise the old song rather than investing time in creating a wonderful script. There also seems to be a rush amongst makers to make a sequel irrespective of the box office collection of previous instalments. Ghayal Once Again is case in point.
The audience had huge expectations from Kahaani 2 starring Vidya Balan. Its first part was a new concept in thriller genre that Bollywood had rarely seen in the past. It gave a new boost to Vidya’s career and garnered huge appreciation for its original cast. However, Kahaani 2 failed to stir the same interest and people found the second half predictable. We take a look at the sequels that released in 2016 but failed to sustain the magic of the original.
Kahaani 2:

Sujoy Ghosh’s thriller drama, Kahaani 2 didn’t live up to the expectations. The previous instalment Kahaani introduced us to a new genre of thriller. It also showed streets and bylanes of Kolkata in a new light. The latest one has some gritty performances from Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal. However, the story doesn’t hold together and falls flat in the second half. The film collected a mere Rs 4.25 cr on the first day. It had a limited release over 1235 screens in the country.

Over the years, Rock On achieved a cult status amongst youth. It was a new concept when it arrived in cinemas with a novel idea, filled with enthusiasm and fresh energy of its lead cast. It was an emotional journey of Magik band through the struggles to keep their friendship intact. You can still listen to people humming those soulful songs.
So there was an anticipation for its remake. Come 2016, Rock On 2 tanked at the box office miserably. The makers didn’t think it was important to delve into new ideas and concepts. Instead, they gave us some stale improvisation of the old version. We saw Farhan Akhtar struggling to create magic with his voice. And Shraddha Kapoor’s acting didn’t help the film either. The film collected a measly Rs 7 crore in its opening weekend. Though, the makers found it safe to blame it all on demonetisation.
Tum Bin 2:

Most of us remember Tum Bin for its songs. The fact that it was shot at foreign locations coupled with a new star cast worked in favour of Tum Bin. But it also had a story. In fact, it was a sleeper hit. But Tum Bin 2 failed in all departments and collected just Rs 2.75 crore in its opening weekend.
Force 2:

Force was better than Force 2 in terms of story, acting and content. However, Force 2 did not do as well as expected. Starring John Abraham and Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles, Force 2 collected Rs 21 crores in its opening weekend.
Ghayal Once Again:

Ghayal was a hit of its time. It had action and a power packed performance by Sunny Deol. However, the makers didn’t think it necessary to develop a new story. The sequel – Ghayal Once Again might have appealed to the masses, but failed to attract the multiplex crowd.
Jai Gangaajal:

Most of you wouldn’t even remember that Jai Gangaajal released this year. The previous instalment Gangaajal starring Ajay Devgn was high on drama. It did well to tell the gritty tales of the underbelly of Bihar. Prakash Jha was spot on creating a dark drama with great assistance from Devgn’s acting prowess. However, its sequel Jai Gangaajal starring Priyanka Chopra tanked at the box office. The film is forgettable.
