Dharma Productions’ Somen Mishra says he ‘slept through’ Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham: ‘It is like Bible in Dharma’

Somen Mishra said before making the switch to Dharma Productions, he was slightly 'apprehensive' because he had 'said so much' about Karan's films, but the filmmaker was 'chill' about his comments.

Film producer and Head of Development at Dharma Productions Somen Mishra has revealed when he joined Karan Johar’s production company, at least “6-7 Dharma directors” had advised the filmmaker to make a Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham again– a film that Somen “slept through”.

In an interview with AnuradhaSays, Somen said he was earlier working with Junglee Pictures and had done Talvar and Badhaai Ho for them. It was while working on the production house’s Raazi–starring Alia Bhatt– that Karan Johar offered him the position. Raazi was a co-production between Junglee and Dharma.

“When I joined Dharma, I remember there were a bunch of 6-7 Dharma directors, all of us talking to Karan, thinking what should he do next. They said, ‘Karan you must make K3G again’ because it is like Bible in Dharma corridor. I thought what the f***, where have I landed, because I had slept through that film.

“I can’t take so much family and it is such a long film, the songs are great (though). I thought if he is going to make that film again, then what are we doing? But Karan is the smartest guy. He said even if he is doing a family film, it has to be reinvented as per today’s generation, gender politics,” he added.

Somen said before making the switch to Dharma, he was sightly “apprehensive” because he had “said so much” about Karan’s films, but the filmmaker was “chill” about his comments. “I am still getting a lot of flak. As people say, if you have to sell your soul, sell it to the highest bidder. So I am selling it to Dharma!

“That flak still goes on, but whenever there is something nice, I am also told ‘Good you went there’, especially when films like Rocky Aur Rani, Love Storiyaan, Geeli Pucchi, or a Gunjan. I am able to do it because Karan understands. Then people appreciate. When something doesn’t land, we also get hate mails, saying, ‘You rejected our script and you made this?!’ That flak is a cycle,” he added.

Somen Mishra was the showrunner of Prime Video’s docu-drama Love Storiyaan, which was produced by Dharma Productions.
