When Dev Anand threw a ‘fit’ after he was tricked into shooting at ‘cheat Rohtang Pass’ by Yash Johar for Guide, recalls Karan Johar

Yash thought on his feet and asked the cinematographer Fali Mistry if it was necessary to make it to Rohtang Pass. “He just casually went up to the DOP of the film and said, ‘Where we are right now, does it look pretty much the same from where you will capture Rohtang Pass?’ He said, ‘Yash ji it will look the same,” he shared. So Yash decided to trick Dev Anand into believing that this place was Rohtang Pass.

“He took a look at the milestone that said ‘Rohtang Pass 12 kms’, made them paint it and write Rohtang Pass 0 kms. And Dev saab has reached location and said ‘Fantastic look at this, beautiful location. I told you Yash and you were arguing with me. look how beautiful’. And they shot ‘O mere humrahi’, that whole antara, they have done in that location which was a cheat Rohtang Pass location,” he recalled with a laugh.

After they were done shooting, Dev decided to take a walk but as he walked ahead, he found a milestone that read ‘Rohtang Pass 11 kms’. He shared that Dev threw a “Herculean fit but by then the job was done and the film was shot.”

Guide, also starring Waheeda Rehman, was directed by Vijay Anand, and is still regarded as one of the best films of Hindi cinema.
