Dev Anand ‘demoted’ Jackie Shroff to henchman role after offering him second lead in Swami Dada: ‘Mithun Chakraborty will do it, he knows how to dance’
Before making his big Bollywood debut with Subhash Ghai's 1983 film Hero, Jackie Shroff played Shakti Kapoor's henchman in the 1982 movie Swami Dada, starring Dev Anand in the lead role.

Actor Jackie Shroff bagged his first movie because he was studying in the same acting institute as Dev Anand’s son, Suneil Anand. Before making his big Bollywood debut with Subhash Ghai’s 1983 film Hero, Shroff played Shakti Kapoor’s henchman in the 1982 movie Swami Dada, starring Dev Anand in the lead role.
In a recent interview with actor Mukesh Khanna, Shroff shared how he managed to land a role in Swami Dada without auditioning for it. He revealed Suniel Anand introduced him to his father. “Suneil mujhe le gaye Dev sahab ke pass. Unhone merko dekhte hi bola, ‘Subah subah tumhari tasveer dekhi, shaam ko tum mere saamne khade ho, main tumhe role zaroor dunga (You are my second lead (Suneil took me to Dev sir. The moment he saw me, he said, ‘I saw your pictures in the morning and you are standing in front of me in the evening. I will definitely give you a role).'” remembered Shroff.
Shroff revealed that he was ‘scared’ about the opportunity, and he even discussed his insecurities as an actor and dancer with his mother. Fifteen days later, Dev Anand called Shroff to inform him that his role had been given to Mithun Chakraborty instead.

“He said, ‘Woh senior hai, usse dance bhi aata hai. Tumhein Shakti Kapoor ki gang mein rakha hai (He is a senior, he knows how to dance. You will be there in Shakti Kapoor’s gang) So, I became Shakti Kapoor’s henchman. He demoted me in just 15 days,” Shroff shared, and added that he saw this as an opportunity to learn from Dev Anand and stuck with the film.
However, Jackie Shroff was signed by Subhash Ghai for Hero, which gave him the perfect launch. The romantic action drama also starred Meenakshi Sheshadri. During the interview, the actor also mentioned that in Hero, his dialogue delivery came out in Dev Anand’s style instead of Shatrughan Sinha’s, which was what Ghai wanted.
