One aspect of actor-producer Deepika Padukone that has become a talking point for years now is her focus on creating widespread awareness about mental health. A staunch advocate for mental health matters, a recent statement from SN Subrahmanyam, CMD of L&T, has made her take to social media to express her displeasure about the same. She also reacted to the MNC’s explanation a few hours later where they defended the CEO’s vision, commenting, “And they just made it worse”.

A recent video of Subrahmanyam conducting a Q&A session resurfaced on social media where he shared his thoughts about not having a seven-day work week. He said, “I regret I am not able to make you work on Sundays… because I work on Sundays.” Incidentally, this is not the first time an Indian businessman has asked for more from their employees. Previously, Infosys founder Narayana Murthy call for a 70-hour work week. Nevertheless, journalist Faye D’Souza shared Subrahmanyam’s statements, which also included, “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? Come on, get to the office and start working.”

Taking offence to these statements, especially since he is in a position of so much respect and power, Deepika Padukone wrote, “Shocking to see people in such senior positions make such statements. #MentalHealthMatters”.

A few hours later, L&T shared an official statement that read, “At L&T, nation-building is at the core of our mandate. For over eight decades, we have been shaping India’s infrastructure, industries, and technological capabilities. We believe this is India’s decade, a time demanding collective dedication and effort to drive progress and realise our shared vision of becoming a developed nation.

“The Chairman’s remarks reflect this larger ambition, emphasizing that extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary effort. At L&T, we remain committed to fostering a culture where passion, purpose, and performance drive us forward.” Reacting to this, Deepika said, “And they just made it worse”.

This has resulted in a lot more voices asking for a sense of responsibility from people in such positions of power to stop blatantly exploiting human labour, and understand the need for a work-life balance.
