Bipasha Basu breaks down as she shares daughter Devi was born with two holes in heart, had to undergo surgery: ‘Karan was a mess but I had to be strong’
In an Instagram live with Neha Dhupia, Bipasha Basu opened up about how her daughter Devi had to undergo surgery when she was three months old.

Actor couple, Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover welcomed their baby girl Devi in November last year and since then they have been sharing snippets from their parenting journey. Recently, Bipasha made a big revelation about her daughter’s health. In a chat with Neha Dhupia on Instagram Live, the actor shared that Devi was born with two holes in her heart. Bipasha broke down as she shared how her little one had to undergo open heart surgery when she was three months old.
The Jism actor shared that on the third day after Devi’s birth, doctors informed her about her daughter having two holes in her heart. They were asked to undergo a scan every month to check whether the holes were being healed on their own. However, the doctors had warned them that given the holes were so large it wasn’t possible that it would happen on its own. They also told the parents that the best time to get the surgery done would be when Devi was three months old.
“You feel so sad, burdened, and conflicted because how can you put such a small child in an open heart surgery,” Bipasha said, controlling her tears. She added that they manifested their thoughts that it would happen on its own. “The first time we did the scan, it didn’t happen. The next month it didn’t. When we went for the third month, I pretty much had done the research, spoken to surgeons, doctors and been to hospitals,” Bipasha shared, as she broke down.

The actor added that while her husband Karan Singh Grover was not ready, she was sure she wanted to heal her daughter. “I knew she had to be okay. I knew she would be okay. And today, she is okay. It was about getting the operation done at the right time, right place.”
As the actor continued to cry, she shared how difficult it was to take their little child to the hospital, with 10 doctors explaining to them what could happen. She added, “But if you love your child, you must do it however difficult (it can be). It’s for the future of your child. Devi had a very successful operation, and I never had a doubt about it. But the six hours that she was in the OT, my life felt like it stopped.”
Bipasha Basu further shared that even when Karan Singh Grover is generally brave, he was a mess during the process. The emotional mother shared that she spoke to her baby, telling her everything, and she made a noise, giving her a signal that she would be fine.
Bipasha added that even in the ICU, nurses would often tell the parents how Devi makes everyone smile and laugh. She shared a word of caution for all parents that the fear of operation may cause a delay but that can only cause more health issues. “Karan was a mess, and I had to even throw him out of the ICU sometimes. When I saw her in the ICU first time with all the monitors and a dressing bandage in the middle of her chest, she was lying there as a hero. Devi is our brave heart and very powerful.”
Devi even made an appearance in the live, flaunting her smile at Neha and all the viewers. Bipasha added that her daughter is a social butterfly and enjoys the camera. She added that her child would be an athlete given how she is very active. “Yes, she has a scar on her chest and it’s her badge of honour. Knowing she’s my daughter, she would flaunt it and wear low cleavage,” the actor laughed.
In the live, the actor further opened up about opting for IVF, her motherhood journey and dealing with body issues. Bipasha added that she wants to take her time before making a comeback.
