Parents are an extremely important part of anyone’s life, as they are the ones who truly shape and nurture you from the very first day. Actor Arshad Warsi who has always been an open book about his life, did not have his parents’ support for long, as they passed away when he was just 14. In a recent interview, the actor reflected on losing both of them, and how he tried to maintain a strong facade in front of the whole world.

The Jolly LLB 3 actor appeared on Raj Shamani’s podcast, where he talked about his career, his wife, and the struggles he faced before making it big in Bollywood. He admitted that he doesn’t have a lot memories with his family, as he spend most of his childhood in a boarding school. He said, “When it comes to my childhood, I remember more about my school then I do about my family because I went away to boarding school at the age of 8.”

Talking about his mother, Arshad said that his last memory of his mother is a horrible one, and it is something that haunts him to this day. He recalled how after his father’s passing, his mother had developed kidney failure and was on dialysis. “My mother was a simple housewife who cooked great food. She had kidney failure, and she was on dialysis. Doctors had told us not to give her any water and she kept asking for it. I kept saying no, and the night before she passed away, she called for me and again started asking for water. She passed away that night, and it killed me, ” said Arshad.

He added, “There is also some part of myself that keeps telling me that if I had given her water and she had passed away after that, for my whole life I would think that died because I gave her water. ”

Although he is thankful for not carrying around that guilt all his life, he admitted that in hindsight he thinks that he should have given her water. He said, “Now I think that I should have given her the water. I was a kid back then, and I wanted to listen to what the doctor had said. Today I can take that decision, and choose to live with my family instead of spending my last days in the hospital. We never think about the person who is sick, instead we take decisions based on our guilt.”

He revealed that he had to grow up very quickly for his age because didn’t have his parents looking over him. “I was very mature for my age, even as a kid. It was because we had lost a lot of money. My father was struggling and it was constantly going downhill. We started from a big house, had to leave that and the houses just kept getting smaller. After my dad and mom passed away, I barely cried, because I was trying to be a man; I was trying to sort things out. I cried weeks later, when it all hit me together.”

Arshad recalled doing musicals on the weekend, where he would get paid Rs 175 for each show. Considering the bills, the upkeep of the house, and his mother’s treatment, Arshad said that he was barely surviving and that his dire financial situation made him realise the importance of financial freedom.

“I was trying to be brave, but it was really difficult. Your body just gives up after one point and no matter how hard you hold, you break. It was a horrible time to go through. I was barely making a couple of hundred rupees per week, and my mother’s weekly dialysis costed Rs 800. I knew at that point that I had to earn a lot of money,” said Arshad.
