AR Rahman is globally known for his Oscar-winning song ‘Jai Ho’ that was a part of Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire but not many know that the song was first composed for Subhash Ghai’s film Yuvvraaj. Starring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif, the music for this 2008 film was also composed by AR Rahman. In a recent chat with ANI, Ghai revealed that Rahman’s song was first recorded for his film but he later felt that the song would not fit into Yuvvraaj.
“That Jai Ho song was made for Yuvvraaj. We recorded it but after recording, I felt that it won’t work for us in that situation. Rahman gave the song to that (Slumdog Millionaire) film. It is his composition,” Ghai said. The song was supposedly going to be filmed on Zayed Khan as Ghai previously shared the same with The Times of India. He said that he “happily gave the song” to the composer as “it was needed” for Danny Boyle’s film. “I felt the song was slightly too soft and subtle for the aggressive character (Zayed Khan). I’m glad they could use it,” he said.
In an earlier chat with Hindustan Times, AR Rahman had acknowledged the same and said that Ghai “did not want it” but “Danny loved it so I gave it to him.”
Ghai and Rahman first worked together in Taal as Ghai claimed to be the “first who approached Rahman to compose music for Hindi movies.” Rahman was supposed to work with Ghai on Yaadein but because of his commitment with the musical Bombay Dreams, Rahman could not continue on the project. Even for the director’s film Kisna, Rahman could only find time to compose a few tunes. The album was co-composed by Ismail Darbar. Rahman, in an earlier chat with Rediff, had revealed that he composed music for two films – Shikast and Motherland – which were being made by Ghai but later got shelved.
AR Rahman won two Oscars for his work on Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. He won Best Original Song for ‘Jai Ho’ and Best Original Score at the 81st Academy Awards.
