Anurag Kashyap used to be an ‘imaandar aadmi’, don’t know what he’s like now: Piyush Mishra on doing 5 jobs in Gulaal for Rs 2 lakh

Anurag Kashyap was everybody's 'laadla', said Piyush Mishra, as he recalled doing music, lyrics, vocals, acting, and dialogues for the film Gulaal for just Rs 2 lakh.

Writer-actor Piyush Mishra spoke about doing Anurag Kashyap’s Gulaal for a very reasonable amount of money, and said that everybody cut their quotes at the time because they wanted to support Anurag. He said that the filmmaker used to be a very honest person, but added that he has no idea if Anurag has changed in recent times. They’ve reportedly fallen out due to ideological differences, and both have spoken about their prickly relationship in recent interviews.

Speaking to Dainik Jagran, Piyush Mishra was asked about performing various duties on the film Gulaal for very little money. He said, “Yes, but nobody asked for money. It was during Anurag’s struggle phase, and everybody wanted to help him out. His film Paanch had been stalled, Black Friday was in trouble, and he was everybody’s laadla. I took Rs 2 lakh in total, for music, singing, lyrics, acting, and my own dialogues. The most important thing at the time was that his film gets released.”

He continued, “Sabka laadla tha, jiss tarah ka aadmi tha woh. Abhi kaisa hai mujhe maalum nahi, lekin uss waqt toh bahut hi imaandar aadmi tha (Everybody loved him, that was the kind of person he was. I don’t know what he’s like now, but he used to be a very honest man).”

In an interview with The Lallantop last year, Piyush Mishra didn’t mince words while describing his complicated relationship with Anurag. He said in Hindi, “My relationship with him is such that we meet after a few years, but we run out of things to talk about after 15 minutes. We have a coffee and cigarette, and our relationship ends. I run out of things to say, he runs out of things to say, so the conversation ends. Our thoughts don’t match, our political views don’t match, our ethical views don’t match. Our emotional views are the same though. He’s like this bone, stuck in my throat. I can’t swallow it, and I can’t spit it out. That’s our relationship. I can’t sit with him for too long. We don’t have anything to talk about. He’s a cinema buff, and I don’t watch films. What shall I speak to him about?”

Piyush Mishra went on to work with Anurag on the landmark Gangs of Wasseypur movies. Despite their differences, Anurag launched Piyush’s autobiography last year.
