Apart from helming critically acclaimed films, director Anurag Kashyap is known to dabble in the ad-film industry from time to time. His latest collaboration comes with an equally complicated character: comedian Samay Raina. The two men, who find themselves at the epicentre of controversy at least once every month, were seen taking shots at each other’s careers and personal lives while promoting a product.
Samay has worked with the men’s sexual health brand Bold Care in the past as well, and the comedian uses his satirical sense of humour to create interesting ad films. This time Anurag was brought in as well, and the whole premise of the video is that Anurag is actually directing an ad film for condoms with Samay as the lead. The comedian botches the dialogue several times, and Anurag tries to explain to him how to get it right. To give him a point of reference, he brings up Ranveer Singh, but Samay says, ‘Sir, Ranveer mat bolo, mujhe dusra wala yaad aa jaata hai‘ (Sir, please don’t say Ranveer; I start remembering the other one).
Samay again makes a mistake while reading the word ‘delay’ on the packaging; as Anurag is explaining to him what to say, he remarks, “So you mean ‘delay’, like how your movies get delayed?” Anurag scoffs at the joke and threatens to do the acting himself. That suggestion becomes the reality sooner than expected as the director cuts off Samay just as he was about to tell the joke that started the whole India’s Got Latent controversy. Fans on Reddit and Instagram reacted to the post, with some loving the collaboration and some asking for Anurag to get back to directing.
One fan commented, “Not the one to usually appreciate ads, but this is actually hilarious,” while another wrote, “I never thought Anurag Kashyap would be more famous as an actor than a director; sad downfall.” Samay also made a joke about how Anurag’s marriages didn’t last very long, and out of spite the director also made a joke about India’s Got Talent and how the show got cancelled. Balraj Ghai, the co-host of the show, replied to the ad on Instagram and said, “Kya? Humaara show band ho gaya? Chalo abh ussi ko ads mein daalke paise kamaaye!” (What? Our show got cancelled? Now let’s talk about it in ads and make money off it.
