Anurag Kashyap says he shares his Mahindra car with daughter, will never buy Audi or Mercedes like Bollywood friends: ‘Their repairs cost more than my car’

Anurag Kashyap shared that he owns a Rs 30 lakh car, which he shares with his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap. He said he will never go for a car worth crores, which is often prescribed for people in the industry.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has repeatedly said that he makes his best films when he is working within a limited budget. Much like his films, Anurag likes to live his life in a disciplined fashion as he recently shared that he owns only one car, which he shares with his daughter. He added that this wasn’t a luxury car, but a Mahindra, and added that this was more reasonable to maintain than any of the fancy luxury cars that his peers own. It was previously reported that Anurag owns a Mahindra XEV 9e, which costs around Rs 30 lakh (for the top model).

In a recent chat shared on Game Changers’ YouTube channel, Anurag shared that he has no aspirations for a bungalow or expensive cars and said that he likes his peace. “I don’t want to own a building or a mansion. I still live in Versova (Mumbai) and I am very happy there. I have now shifted to Bengaluru and I am happier that I am a bit away from the industry now. But I am constantly working. I have not stopped working,” he said.

When asked about how many cars he owns, Anurag proudly said, “I have one car and I share it with my daughter. It is a Mahindra. My friends bought an Audi, Mercedes. But when it rains and floods in Mumbai, their cars stop working. And it costs so much money to repair them. At half of that cost, you can buy a Mahindra. I have never bought any other car than a Mahindra.” Anurag bought the car in March 2025 and shared some pictures of the same on social media.

The actor has the same thought process towards his films. “To make a film reach the lowest common denominator and make it massy, it has to be dumbed down. And if you don’t want to dumb it down then reduce the budget. Don’t do unnecessary expenses and live in 5-star hotels. Make the film you want to, but don’t cause anyone else a loss. The biggest problem with the art of filmmaking is you’re making it at somebody else’s expense,” he said. He also said that the one film whose loss really impacted him was Bombay Velvet, simply because its Rs 28 crore budget inflated to Rs 90 crore, making unviable even before release.

Anurag recently released his latest directorial Nishaanchi. The director also presented his film Bandar at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Bobby Deol, Sanya Malhotra, Saba Azad among others. The film’s release date in India is yet to be announced.
