Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap attempted to explain the success of Gadar 2, which has made nearly Rs 500 crore at the domestic box office in two weeks of release. Gadar 2, which was released ahead of the Independence Day holiday, is eyeing Pathaan’s all-time record as the highest-earning Hindi film in India.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Anurag said that he hasn’t watched Gadar 2 yet, but could understand why it has become such a big hit. He said that the marketing effectively tapped into the audience’s nostalgia for the first film, which, he reminded everybody, was a bigger hit than both Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai. The first Gadar was released in 2001, the same year as the two Aamir Khan hits.
Anurag said that he is especially pleased that neither the filmmakers behind OMG 2 or Gadar 2 created any animosity between communities. “What I am happy about is that the filmmakers of both OMG 2 and Gadar 2 did not use it as an opportunity to create rift or a divide between communities. This is what happens with many films and opportunists today. It was responsible mainstream filmmaking. It did not create any kind of chaos, or any unnecessary animosity or hatred.”
Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 stars Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa and Simratt Kaur. The film’s success is being seen as a return to form for Sunny, who was among the biggest stars of the ’80s and ’90s.
