Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal, which released in theatres just a few days ago, has been getting a very strong reaction from the audience. While there is a large part of the audience that seems to be loving the film, there is also a section of moviegoers that’s calling out the Sandeep Reddy Vanga film for being deeply misogynistic and problematic. Actor Siddhant Karnick, who is a part of the film, said that as filmmakers, it is not up to them to make a “social message film.” He added that misogyny is a part of Ranbir’s character and underlined that they were not trying to send a message with his actions.

Siddhant, in a chat with News 18, said, “I feel we, as storytellers, aren’t here to make a social message film. We’re here to tell a story. Whether it appeals to the audience or not is up to them to decide. As for the misogyny, Ranbir just plays a character. We aren’t trying to show that this is how we should be. This is just how the character is and this is how he reacts and treats other people and by no means is it a message.”

Siddhant added that it is up to the audience to draw morals from a fictional film. “I’m completely for Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s style and the film he has made. If the audience wants to draw morals, ethics and value system from a fictional film, that’s their choice. Our job is to tell a story and make the audience feel intensely about it. Irrespective of what the argument is, we’ve achieved that,” he said.

Defending the reactions that the film is getting, Siddhant said that it is his job as an actor to make the audience feel, but it is not his responsibility if they are feeling good or bad. He said, “It’s not my responsibility to make them feel good or bad. My job is to just make them feel. Period. And this is in context to how people are feeling intensely about the film whether it’s positive or negative.”

Siddhant plays the role of Ranbir’s brother-in-law in the film. In an earlier social media post appreciating Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the actor called his voice unique and thanked him for casting him in the film. “This artist has developed such a unique voice that you can watch any minute of this film, from any part and know that its a Sandeep Reddy Vanga film.” he wrote.
