Anees Bazmee has directed some of the most memorable comedy films in Bollywood, with his latest, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, playing to resounding success in theatres. Recently, Anees opened up about the earliest phase of his career in Bollywood, and shared how he worked as a junior artist to make ends meet. In a conversation with Mashable India, Anees revisited his days of struggle and recalled a story about being too broke to be mugged.

Recalling his youth, Anees said that he changed houses very often. He revealed that his family used to live in a small room. “We were seven to eight people living in a decent room, this is also why we are so close-knit as a family, because we didn’t have the space back then. There used to be no space to even turn while sleeping.”

Recalling his days as a junior artist, he said, “When I started working, I had to take up small gigs. I used to be a junior artist before I played a role with Shatrughan Sinha as a child actor. At that time, I needed money to run my house. My per day used to be Rs 15 at that time. From that, the man who was supposed to pay me deducted Rs 2. Since then, 13 became a lucky number for me. As I grew up, I stopped getting work (as a junior artist). Then, I worked in sound recording and was getting Rs 5 for it.”

During the conversation, Anees Bazmee also recalled the time when he lived at Malwani Nagar in Mumbai, and was looted there in the middle of the night. “Those lanes used to be very isolated. I was looted once at knifepoint. He beat me because I had no money on me. I had nothing he could steal, so they beat me up. There were five-six people. I did not revolt back, because I didn’t think it was safe.”

Having directed some popular comedy films like No Entry, Welcome, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and 3, and more, Anees says his talent for comedy stems from a strenuous past. “I have seen lots of troubles and sorrows in life which is the reason why I do comedy so well,” he said.
